Courtmacsherry 2016

Apr 2016

Just a few days in Ireland with my brother Marc.

He wanted to go flying and play golf. I was on a mission to find the Larry O'Rourke, fish, paint and dine out. Great restaurants. And perhaps some drinking.

Unfortunately, things didn't quite go as planned. Do they ever? The weather was dire the first few days. No flying, no fishing.

Restaurants were still open though - well, some of them on certain days. By far the best was Monks Lane.

The weather did make for some atmospheric photos.

And I managed to get a painting done:

           became

I later found a great art studio in Kilbritain which had a photo almost identical to this. Mick O'Donovan's pub in Butlerstown.

Our nephew / Godson Joe joined us from Trinity for a few days. He bought dreadful weather with him.

We took him to The Pink Elephant restaurant across the bay in Harbour View. It's the 'go to' family place. Stupid of us really because it was the first day of the holiday that the Courtmacsherry Hotel, walking distance away, was open for dinner. Why didn't we just go there?

We nearly didn't make it back from The Pink Elephant - all the roads flooded on the spring tide and it was chucking it down. We spent hours trying to find a non-coastal route back to Courtmac. We failed and finally settled in Clonakilty to watch the final of the Augusta Masters, which Marc had a chance to go to! Who wants glorious sunshine and the World's premier golf event when you have the chance of being swept away by tide and rain.

I still think there is a way to get from the Elephant to Courtmac by going uphill to Barryroe and then dropping down. Actually, looking at the map now I see there is - but we were going completely the wrong way! Not as clued up as we thought.

It wasn't all bad weather though. Next day was lovely. Beach time.

Dunworley beach.

Joey was very brave.....

Marc got to play golf at Lisselan. Beautiful place. He was happy.

I went for a drive and found a very romantic looking deserted cottage. It was right by the shore, had a beach adjacent to it, a boat slip, fantastic view and its own cove contained within its land. Awesome.

I later found out who owned it and asked if it might be for sale. Alas not.

Oh, and I did get to Cape Clear, the Southern-most island off Ireland.

I was following a tip that the Larry had been sold to someone there. I was there, Larry wasn't. Mind you, that tip was like 20 years ago.

It was such a beautiful boat.
